    NB: New three-shift system became on stream from August 1999.

    APPROACH: The port is located in the Gulf of Paria and is approached via the Grier Channel, 1.25 miles long and 500 feet wide. Depth 10 meters Landmark: Northern Range.

    HAZARDS: Diamond Rock is a submerged rock in the Grand Bocus located between the island of Chacachacarc and the Venezuelan mainland.

    TRANSPORTATION: Inland transportation is by truck.

    Piarco International Airport is 26 km from Port of Spain.

    IMPORTS AND EXPORTS: Imports: Not known Exports: Not known.

    WEATHER: Easterly winds of 10-15 knots Tide flows in a circular motion around the Gulf of Paria, whether ebbing or flooding.

    ANCHORAGE: One mile off west of Fairway Beacon.

    PILOTAGE: Pilot boards half a mile outside the Grier Channel For ships berthing at King's Wharf, pilot boards one mile west of entrance to the Grier Channel. Pilotage charges are calculated on the basis of grt.

    TOWAGE: Provided by Port Authority of Trinidad & Tobago.

    Cruise: Two berths with tourist complex at Berths 1/2 Breakbulk: Four berths (Nos 2,3,4,5) totalling 636 meters Container: Berths 6, 6A (east) and 6A (west) totalling 380 meters Ro-ro: Inter-island ferry terminal Tankers and LPG carriers: No berths available Bulk: Berths 7, 8 and 8a (west).

    NEW FACILITIES: Shore ramp for the GSS ferries became operational in 1999.

    PRIVATE WHARFS: None.

    MEDICAL AID: Port of Spain General Hospital is 2.4 km from the port.

    ENVIRONMENT: A solid and liquid waste disposal service is available in the port. Trinidad & Tobago is the headquarters for an IMO-sponsored regional project, the Wider Caribbean Initiative on Ship Generated Waste (WCISW), which urges all 22 member countries to ratify Marpol and to install waste management facilities at their ports.
