    WORKING HOURS:

    Straight time: Sun-Sat 24 hrs (cargo handling)

    Overtime: Public Holidays, container deliveries Sun (Mon-Sat 2300-0700 hrs)

    Port closed: Christmas Day.

     

    APPROACH: Main approach channel is 1.75 nautical miles long and 152 metres wide with a depth of 12.8 metres • There are 11 light buoys with flashing lights • Turning basins are 500 metres and 300 metres in diameter respectively. Both have been dredged to 12.8 metres. True course is 052.25°.

    HAZARDS: Mild Swells.

    TRANSPORTATION: Point Lisas has access to Trinidad’s modern highway system with four-lane roads providing an easy link between Port of Spain and major destinations. The Churchill Roosevelt Highway runs east-west, connecting Port of Spain with the airport, while the Uriah Butler and Solomon Hochoy Highways run north-south, linking Port of Spain with San Fernando, the island’s second city.  Point Lisas is centrally located on the western coast of the Solomon Hochoy Highway.

    • Piarco International Airport is 48 km from Point Lisas and there is a domestic airport within 5 miles with emergency helicopter service.

    IMPORTS AND EXPORTS:

    Imports: consumables, lumber, household products, tiles, construction type cargo, steel, chemicals, plastic and rubber products, textiles, electric products/appliances, bulk (animal feed, sugar), general equipment.

    • Exports: consumables, electrical fittings, disposable diapers, cementitious products, equipment, lubricants, paints, ammonia, urea, steel, methanol and general equipment.

    WEATHER: Tropical weather conditions with easterly winds. Tide flows in a circular motion around the Gulf of Paria.

     

    ANCHORAGE: Two anchorages with depths between 4 and 23 metres, located NW and SE of the entrance to the dredged channel. The NW anchorage is marked by a light buoy and is for inward bound vessels only. The SE anchorage is for outward bound vessels only.

    Inbound vessels may anchor in the area bounded by:

    Longitude: 61°32.2’ W • Latitude: 10°24’N

     

    Outbound vessels may anchor in the area bounded by:

    Longitude: 61°31.2’W • Latitude: 10°22.5’N

    Longitude: 61°30.2’W • Latitude: 10°22’N

     

    PILOTAGE: Compulsory. Notice is required as follows: 48, 24, 12 hours. Pilot boards at entrance to Savonetta Channel. Pilot’s ladder must conform to international safety regulations. Pilot boards lee side of vessel, 1 metre above water.

     

    TOWAGE: Two harbour tugs rated at 2,250 and 4,600 hp each, bollard pull of 40 tonnes each. Bow area stiffened to accommodate push/pull operations. Two workboats/launches rated at 500 hp each, bollard pull of 12 tonnes each. Ship lines are used.

     

    TRAFFIC: Ro/Ro/Bulk/Breakbulk/Container/Liquid bulk/iron ore: approx. 1,500 to 2,000 vessel calls at Point Lisas per year

    • Total tonnage (2007): 19,443,456.936 metric tonnes (liquid/dry bulk

    PORT SERVICES: Stevedoring: Point Lisas Terminals Ltd (a subsidiary of PLIPDECO), Orinoco Drive, Point Lisas Industrial Estate, Point Lisas, Trinidad and Tobago.

     SHIP REPAIR: Arranged through ship’s agents. Facilities available at Chaguaramas, about 20 nautical miles from Point Lisas:

    Dry dock capacity: 23,000 dwt (floating dry dock to be operational in Q4 2008) Graving Dock Capacity: 350 feet pier with a minimum draught of 24 feet, berthing for vessels: 270 LOA x 55 feet beam

    • Floating dock: 160 feet distance between wing walls 50 feet, maximum draught of vessel in light condition 10 feet, maximum displacement of vessel in light condition 700 metric tonnes 300 x 20 feet jetty.

     

    SLOP RECEPTION: Available, please arrange through ship’s agents.

    LIGHTERS: Available, please arrange through ship’s agents.

     

    MEDICAL AID: Augustus Long Medical Facility is located 5 km from the port

    Couva Medical Complex is 1.5 km from the port • First Aid Station located on site • Ambulance available for transporting casualties to medical premises.

    Shiprepair: Arranged through ship agents. Floating dock of 11,000 tonnes capacity available at Chaguaramas, about 20 nautical miles from Point Lisas. Underwater and hull cleaning available.

    Slop reception: Although facilities are available for the following, this can be done through the agents. Plipdeco is not directly involved. It uses private organizations such as DF&E, Solid Waste Management Co Ltd., Waste Disposals and RAMCO.

    Lighters: Arranged through ship agents.

    NEW FACILITIES: Infrastructure: Expansion of the port entrance has been completed. Upon completion, procedures were put in place to reduce congestion.

    The port is currently implementing the recommendations of a study by Price Waterhouse and Port Ability International and will be upgrading its facilities to accommodate increased traffic in the breakbulk and container sectors.

    PRIVATE WHARFS: None.
