APPROACH: Paramaribo is on the Suriname River about 21 miles from fairway buoy.

HAZARDS: Sand and mud bars at entrance to Suriname River.

Vessels must be piloted by high tide.

Weather: Fair winds and tropical weather Tidal variation is 3 meters.

TRANSPORTATION: Inland transportation is by road.

JAP International Airport is 45 km from the sea port Zorg en Hoop Domestic Airport is 5 km from the sea port.

IMPORTS AND EXPORTS:

Import: General cargo Exports: Rice, bananas, seafood, lumber.

ANCHORAGE: The anchorage area is beyond the outer bar where there is soft mud.

PILOTAGE: Pilot boards at sea buoy Vessels are requested to send arrival messages 36, 24 and 12 hours prior to arrival at the sea buoy.

TOWAGE: Private tugs are available.

Berthage: Berth 1 is 520 meters long with a depth alongside of 6.5 meters.

NEW FACILITIES: The port administration plans to carry out a port expansion and rehabilitation project that will include the removal of one shed and expansion of the car and container storage area.

PRIVATE WHARFS: None.

MEDICAL AID: Academisch Ziekenhuis.
