The eight founding members of the association created an organization to deal with the labor issues affecting the industry in 1970. Following its inception, the association has grown to comprise a group of 30 companies dedicated to numerous sectors of the maritime business. Its tasks have expanded to include the representation of its membership in various socio-political forums, as well as acting as a clearing house for numerous maritime-related initiatives. During the past several years, the association has focused on controlling costs, improving productivity and maintaining the ports of Puerto Rico as attractive cruise and transhipment points. Home port: With its strategic location in the Caribbean, Puerto Rico is ideally situated for its role as a home port for the cruise industry as well as a transhipment hub for the large number of cargo vessels transiting this area. The Puerto Rico Shipping Association has been working hand in hand with the Puerto Rico Port Authorities to maintain competitive tariffs and improve port facilities in order to better serve the country's varied customer base.
