The National Shipping Association of Grenada

The National Shipping Association of Grenada (NASAG) was formed in November, 1991 and was duly registered as a trade union in accordance with the Trade Unions & Trade Disputes Act Cap 297 of the revised laws of Grenada.

    The Association's stated objectives include:

To unite corporations, bodies, partnerships or other organizations of persons "...who are engaged or interested either directly or indirectly in the handling or custody of goods at sea either within or without the territorial waters of Grenada of every description..."

" To provide for consultation among members, to ascertain their views on matters of common concern and to take steps to give effect thereto."

" To promote, support and/or oppose any statute, order, regulation or other enactment affecting or likely to affect the association or its members."

Efficient: The association has always articulated its interest in a more efficient and cost effective port. It has made an input into discussions on port tariffs since its members are among the primary port users in Grenada.

It has also sought to have discussions with the Government of Grenada regarding the ongoing port rehabilitation project and the frequent complaints about the harassment of visitors without success.

The association is conscious of its responsibility to the nation and is keenly interested in the welfare of Grenadian consumers who bear the cost of imported goods whose prices are inflated by prohibitive labour costs at the docks.

Surcharge: The Caribbean Shipping Association has levied a Port Inefficiency Surcharge of US$250.00 per 20 ft container landed in Grenada by its ships. In a letter to the Prime Minster dated 27th March they stated:

"Grenada is the most expensive port in the region when one considers the compounded high costs of slow container productivity, overtime and port costs... Unfortunately, the cost of this inefficiency is borne by all Grenadians as those costs will be passed along......"

The National Shipping Association of Grenada's membership at present comprises seven ships' agents, the Grenada Ports Authority and the Grenada Board of Tourism.
