    WORKING HOURS: Mon-Sun: 07.00-22.00 - Closed: New Year's Day, Christmas Day, Good Friday.

    APPROACH: The port is located in Baie des Flamands and the main approach is via Pointe des Negres, a wide open bay - Landmark: Pointe des Negres beacon.

    HAZARDS: Numerous sand bars and reefs - Shallow water - Overhead electric and telephone wires - Submarine wrecks.

    TRANSPORTATION: Inland transportation is by truck. Goods are transported between port and rest of country by road and cabotage.

    Fort-de-France International Airport is at Le Lamentin, 10 km from the sea port.

    IMPORTS AND EXPORTS: Imports: All types of goods - Export: Bananas.

    WEATHER: Trade winds - No tides.

    ANCHORAGE: The anchorage is used by some cruise ships. Otherwise all vessels berth except under special circumstances such as awaiting a berth or crew.

    PILOTAGE: As per international regulations. Pilot boards at Pointe des N gres. Pilotage rates are calculated by LOA, breadth and maximum summer draft.

    TOWAGE: Not necessary.

    TRAFFIC: Vessel calls per year: 2,000

    Container: 430 - Cruise: 319 - Ro-ro: 423 - Bulk: 170 - Breakbulk: 20

    Inter-island ferries: 828 - Cargo handled per year: 2.8 million tonnes. - Cargo handled per day: More than 10,000 tonnes.

    EQUIPMENT: Three Paceco gantry cranes with a capacity of 40 tonnes each.

    STORAGE: Open storage: 30 hectares - Covered storage: 18,000 square meters.

    Ore and bulk cargo: Terminal for ships up to 120,000 dwt and 17 meters draft.

    Air draft: No restrictions - Refrigeration capacity: 100 reefer points.

    BUNKERS: By barge and road tanker.

    PROVISIONS: Three suppliers.

    WATER: Fresh water freely available throughout the port area at a cost of FF11 per cubic meter. No volume restrictions.

    FACILITIES: Maximum draft alongside: 12 meters - Longest vessel: 325 meters.

    Cruise: Terminal off Fort-de-France with two berths of 200 and 270 meters with 10 meters depth. Dedicated 325 meter quay with 12 meters depth at Les Tourelles. Container: Handled at Hydrobase Quay and the container terminal.

    Ro-ro: One ro-ro berth located alongside Tourelles Quay. All quays can accommodate ro-ro vessels with transverse ramps.

    NEW FACILITIES: Plans for a new 460 meter container terminal with 14 meters depth and 16 hectares of storage, due for completion in 2002.

    MEDICAL AID: Nearest hospital is 3 km from the port in La Meynard.

    ENVIRONMENT: IMO regulations. Environmental protection is the responsibility of the Direction Departemental des Affairs Maritimes de la Martinique; Prefecture de la Maritime; Direction Regionale des Douanes; Direction Regionale de l'Environment; Parc Natural Regional de la Nautique (PNRN); and Direction Departementale de l'Equipment.
