2003, February 21:
Michael Johnson has turned to the CSA for help.
Who is Michael Johnson?
Michael grew up in Guyana and emigrated to
the USA about 20 years ago. Like most Caribbean people, although away from
home, his concern and love for his homeland have remained strong.
According to Michael: “I’ve been reading
www.guyanachronicle.com
about the social and economic situation in Guyana and have become committed
to making a difference in the lives of the youth living there. It is this
commitment that motivated me to conceive and execute this project.”
What project?
Michael wanted to contribute something of
lasting value and went about accumulating books for the Georgetown public
library. He says he now has 7,000 books in his basement, collected in New
York, New Jersey, Ohio and Michigan and needs to get the shipment to
Georgetown. He knew he couldn’t air freight such a cargo and turned to the
shipping industry for help.

“I was in contact with Chris Fernandes of the
CSA, and through his assistance have made shipping arrangements with
Seafreight Agencies in Miami who has agreed to transport the books from
Miami to Georgetown free of charge. Shipment will also be handled from the
Port of Georgetown to the Georgetown Public Library. I need support in
getting the books from New Jersey to Miami.”

The books are destined for the Linden Public
Library in Guyana. They will be sent to the Georgetown Public Library for
cataloguing prior to arrival at their final destination and are therefore
consigned to the Chief Librarian of the Georgetown Public Library.
“I have been in contact with the Chief
Librarian - Karen Sills-George – she was quite pleased with the results of
the project. She has promised to give the books a high priority upon their
receipt,” Mr. Johnson explained.
Asked how the CSA could help, Michael Johnson
said: “Any assistance you can offer me in getting the books from New Jersey
to Miami would be greatly appreciated.”
