2006, January 24, PORT OF SPAIN: Korean Ambassador, SHIN Soon-chull has reaffirmed his Government’s commitment to cooperate with the countries of the Caribbean through the Association of Caribbean States (ACS).

The Caribbean Shipping Association is a Social Partner of the ACS.

The Ambassador (2nd left) visited the headquarters of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) in Port-of-Spain earlier this month (on 18th January 2006) for discussions with Secretary General Rubén Silié (right).

Also present at this meeting were Mr. Luis Carpio, Director responsible for Transport and Natural Disasters; Mr. Manuel Madriz, Trade Director; Mr. Juan Fernando Valey, Transport and Natural Disasters Advisor and Mr. Jong Uk Choi, Second Secretary at the Embassy of Korea in Caracas.

During the discussions, the Ambassador spoke of the impending signing of the Framework Co-operation Agreement with the ACS. He also indicated that his government had pledged the sum of US$35,000.00 to co-finance the ACS Maritime Transport project entitled "Map of Maritime Routes in the Greater Caribbean". The objective of this project is to produce an updated map of the main maritime routes in the Greater Caribbean, which will provide regional and international importers, exporters, buyers and sellers with key information regarding the movement of goods.

Apart from an expected increase in intra-regional maritime trade and an improvement in overseas linkages, the project will also allow the ACS to determine whether or not there are areas within the Greater Caribbean territory without maritime services, and also whether the existing companies adequately meet the region’s maritime transport needs.

This project is expected to come on stream during the first half of 2006.
