    BUNKER SURCHARGE INCREASE

2005, August 23: Eight shipping lines serving the Caribbean have announced their intention of imposing a surcharge on bunker, effective September 18, 2005.

The Lines involved -- Bernuth Lines, CMA-CGM Caribbean, CP Ships, Crowley Liner Services, Interline, Seaboard Marine, SeaFreight Line and Tropical Shipping – are bound together in the Caribbean Shipowners Association.

The Caribbean Shipowners Association is not a member of the Caribbean Shipping Association and is not associated with the Regional body.

The Lines, who provide service between the United States and Caribbean destinations including Anguilla, Antigua, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Montserrat, Saba, St Barths, St Eustatius, St Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, St Maarten, St Vincent, Trinidad, Haiti, Jamaica, Guyana and Suriname, cite escalation of fuel prices as reason for the decision to impose the increase. In a statement from their association dated August 17, 2005,

They detailed the increase to the Bunker Surcharge, based on the West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil price of $55 per barrel as follows:

            Effective September 18, 2005

                                                       Current Bunker             Increase           New Bunker

    20’ Container -                      $ 171.00             + $   78.00          = $ 249.00

    40’ Container -                      $ 308.00             + $ 140.00          = $ 448.00

    Over 40’ Equipment -            $ 352.00             + $ 160.00          = $ 512.00

    LCL -                                   $     7.25 w/m     + $     3.25          = $   10.50 w/m

    Breakbulk -                           $     7.25 w/m     + $     3.25          = $   10.50 w/m

    Vehicles over 700 cft             $     7.25 w/m     + $     3.25          = $   10.50 w/m

    Vehicles – up to and

       Including 700 cft                 $   65 Each         + $   35 Each      = $ 100 Each

NOTE: Weight (W) based on 2,000 lbs. and Measurement (M) based on 40 cubic feet. The Bunker Surcharge is assessed in addition to all other charges, and applies to all tariff and service contract rates in the U.S. and Puerto Rico trade.
