US290 million state-of-the-art facility operated by

    CSX World Terminals

2004, April 21: The Caucedo terminal, the Dominican Republic’s ultra-modern container facility, is already receiving eight ships a week from the 12 Lines serving the port.

The US$290 million container terminal, built on a green field site, was officially declared open in a ceremony last week (April 15), but has been receiving ships since December last. It has the capacity to move 500,000 containers a year, with yard storage for up to 9,500 40-foot boxes.

Located in Boca Chica, just 10 minutes from Las Americas International Airport, the port is expected to be a major Caribbean transshipment hub. Expectations are that the country’s central location in the north-south and east-west sea lanes will present a competitive advantage.

Phase 1 of the development includes 50 hectares (123.5 acres) of terminal area and 600 metres of deepwater berth, dredged to 14 metres (46 feet). The area has just over 1.1 kilometres (0.68 miles) of sea front. Equipment includes five post-Panamax gantry cranes. A free trade zone park will be developed next to the container terminal and will allow direct access to both the new container terminal and the Las Americas International Airport.

It is operated by CSX World Terminals, a North Carolina-based port operator and one of the biggest marine transport companies in the United States.

Dominican partners Samuel Conde, Manuel Tavares and Jaak Rannik explained that Caucedo’s port will be able to compete internationally because of its efficient cost structures and flow of operations. Andrew Fogarty, president of CSX World Terminals, said that the inauguration of the port marks the beginning of an era of economic dynamism in the Dominican Republic, allowing direct and frequent shipping to places as Miami, Puerto Rico and Jamaica.
