2004, June 1:
The Caribbean Shipping Association
(CSA) has established a Cruise Committee which will concentrate on the
maritime side of the Region’s cruise tourism industry. The Committee will
also concentrate on marketing, as well as developing models for cooperation;
security and training; and environmental issues.
The decision to establish this Standing Committee was finalized at the third
Caribbean Shipping Executives Conference held May 25 and 26 in Castries,
Saint Lucia. Cruise business has always been on the CSA’s agenda but
deliberations at the Association’s meetings have been dominated by trade and
cargo topics.
With the continued growth of
Caribbean cruise tourism and the increasing importance of this business to
Caribbean national economies, the CSA decided to ensure that sufficient time
was dedicated to cruise. It was also felt that a standing committee would
facilitate a continuing programme of work and assistance that would be of
benefit to the Caribbean players in the cruise industry.
The CSA’s Cruise Committee has stated its objective as: “To enhance
and facilitate the development of the maritime aspects of Caribbean cruise
tourism.” In this context, the Committee has set itself specific
short-term and long-term goals. It will serve the interests of CSA members
involved in cruise tourism by creating partnerships between public and
private sector entities serving the industry. In this regard, it will forge
partnerships with all relevant industry organizations, including the Florida
Caribbean Cruise Association, which is already an Associate member of the
CSA.
The membership of the Committee will include representatives of all the
major cruise ship home-ports and cruise destinations in the Caribbean,
including the Port of Miami, ports in the Northern Caribbean, including: the
Bahamas; San Juan; ports of Jamaica; ports of the Organization of Eastern
Caribbean States; and ports in the Southern Caribbean.
The Cruise Committee will
meet at CSA general meetings on the day set aside for Standing Committee
meetings.
