A tangible sign of development in
southern Puerto Rico

January 26: Ponce was big in the news in
January, taking possession of two gantry cranes which have change the skyline of
the Puerto Rican city.
The two
Super Post Panamax cranes, manufactured by the Chinese firm ZPMC, arrived at the
Port of Thursday January 21, 2010. Their arrival marked an important milestone
in the progress of the port and its programme of expanding capability to become
the principal containerized cargo hub in the Caribbean.
PONCE'S INVESTMENT
Ponce’s
crane investment, a total of $22.7 million and was financed through a line of
credit with Puerto Rico’s Government Development Bank.
Physically the cranes are quite impressive. They each weigh 1,600 metric tones
and have an outreach of 187 feet and a backreach of 52.5 feet. They have “twin
pick” capabilities, making them able to lift two 20-ft containers
simultaneously; and, they have a lifting a range of up to 126 feet above the
piers.
Ponce’s
new ZPMC ship-to-shore cranes have not only transformed the city’s skyline. They
are a tangible sign of economic development in southern Puerto Rico.
