General
Council commits to assisting Haiti
... plans to work in rebuilding efforts
2010, January 31: The Caribbean Shipping
Association has committed to assisting in the rebuilding and redevelopment of
Haiti.
The
General Council of the Association discussed the plight of the country hit by a
devastating earthquake on January 12 and applauded the current efforts by a
number of countries and organizations to deal with the immediate situation. In
this regard, the Association noted the contribution already being made by a
number of its members, including shipping lines. The General Council, at its
meeting in Kingston on January 18 also discussed the damage to port
infrastructure and the crippling congestion and logistics challenges in getting
relief supplies into that country.
Against
this background, and given the state of emergency still existing in the country,
the CSA Council came to a consensus which will allow the relief and medical
agencies on the ground in Haiti space to complete operations.
The CSA General Council decided to look at Haiti’s
needs with respect to redevelopment over the longer term. In this regard the CSA
will be looking specifically at what it can do by way of assisting in the
development of a major project in the country’s rebuilding programme. In
carrying out this mission, the CSA will be working in collaboration with its
members and the shipping community of Haiti.
As
soon as the plans for CSA involvement are finalized, an announcement setting out
the details of the CSA initiative will be made.
BUDGET REVIEW
The General Council, which met at The Courtleigh
hotel, reviewed the draft CSA budget; dealt with a number of issues related to
members services; and discussed plans for the year ahead. In this regard, the
Council looked at plans for the 2010 Caribbean Shipping Executives Conference to
be held in May 17, 18 and 19 in Willemstadt, Curaçao. The Association’s 40th
Annual General Meeting will be in October 2010 and will be held in Montego Bay.
CSA

since being elected President in October last, said that because this was a
significant milestone in the history of the Association, the 40th annual general
meeting would be treated as a special event.
