Carriacou
resident wins CSA Monica Silvera Scholarship
Wallace Collins impresses panel with
record of community service
2009,
October 21: Wallace Vincent Collins is the first winner of the Caribbean
Shipping Association’s Monica Silvera Scholarship.
The 36 year-old Carriacou resident was presented to
CSA members at the 39th Annual General Meeting, Conference and Exhibition, held
in Paramaribo, Suriname, October 12, 13 and 14, 2009.
Created
in memory of Mrs. Monica Silvera, the first female Executive Vice President of
the Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA), this scholarship was open to persons
residing in member countries of the CSA who are interested in pursuing higher
education in the shipping, logistics and supply chain management sectors. The
scholarship, tenable at the Caribbean Maritime Institute in Jamaica, covers
tuition costs for four years for any selected Bachelor of Science degree
programme offered by the Institute.
An employee of the Grenada Ports Authority since June 1994, Wallace Collins left teaching Grade 3 students to start in shipping as a station clerk. He rose to the level of Supervisor of Carriacou
Out-station where his responsibilities included supervising personnel; fees
collection and record keeping; maintenance of equipment, buoys and other
navigational aids; and, arranging berthing for ships.
In
those 15 years with the Grenada Ports Authority, he attended more than 20
different training events – seminars and workshops – in Grenada and overseas. He
was in Singapore in 2008 for a Port Management and Operations programme and
earlier this year participated in a programme of Law Enforcement at Sea for
Developing Countries, held in the Peoples Republic of China.
Wallace
Collins impressed the CSA scholarship selection panel with his study and work
ethics but also with his community spirit. He was awarded the British Empire
Medal for Community Service in 2008 and, previously, the Most Outstanding Youth,
Community Work, 2006-2007, by the Ministry of Carriacou & P.M Affairs. Back in
2000 he was recognized for his “Outstanding Contribution to the Disabled” by the
Grenada Council of the Disabled.
Wallace
Collins is currently enrolled at Caribbean Maritime Institute, Jamaica, part
time, in a 18-month programme, the M.Sc. Logistics and Supply Chain Management,
having started in October, 2009
