Maritime Industry Safety Week 2009


2009,
July 6: The Puerto Rico Shipping Association (PRSA) will begin Safety Week
with a Proclamation Ceremony on Monday July 13, beginning at 10.30 a.m.
The
event, which will take place at the offices of PRSA in San Juan, will have the
participation of members of the Association as well as representatives from
Federal and State government agencies.
Keynote
speaker at the Proclamation Ceremony will be Mr. Jose Carpena, Director of the
Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) area office.
The theme
for this week is “Safety is a Way of Life”.
The goals
established for Safety Week 2009 are:

Raise
awareness
-
Improves attitude towards safety
-
Increase understanding of the importance of occupational health and safety in
the maritime industry
-
Foster
a safety-minded culture
According
to the PRSA, Safety Week 2009 “ … presents an excellent opportunity to focus,
reinforce and strengthen commitment to occupational safety and health.”
On
February 20 2008, the PRSA signed a “landmark” agreement with the Occupational
Safety & Health Administration. The agreement, which covers the 36 member
companies of the Association, brings both organizations together to:
-
develop
a safety and health curriculum on Supervisory Accident Prevention Program, in
Spanish, for the maritime industry;
-
deliver
or arrange for the delivery of the new OSHA 10 hours course in the Maritime
Industry;
-
establish the safety syllabus for the Maritime Industry Crane operators,
course which will become a core training requirement to certify all crane
operators in Puerto Rico Maritime Industry.
