CSA makes history hosting largest ever training event

2009, June 8: The Caribbean Shipping Association broke another record recently by having the largest international training event in its 39 years of history.

Over 120 persons gathered at the Las Americas hotel in Cartagena, Colombia over two days, May 21 and 22, to take part in a cruise tourism seminar, “Benefiting from Cruise Tourism” hosted by the CSA and presented in collaboration with local agencies ProExport, Corporación Turismo Cartagena de Indias and the Sociedad Portuaria Regional de Cartagena (SPRC).

The 123 participants included representatives from a number of sub-sectors in the cruise industry - tour guides, ground transportation, tour operators, maritime agencies, restaurants, retail establishments, the port authority, airport, visitor attractions, operators of historical sites, government agencies including the tourism board and the police. Students of tourism assisted during the event.

“The seminar was a resounding success such that the agencies involved are interested in bringing the training to additional audiences in other cities as well as for an expanded training program,” said Clive Forbes, CSA’s General Manager. “These cruise sector workshops are timely as we face challenging times ahead due to the global financial crisis and we need to ensure that we are maximizing the opportunities offered by the cruise industry.”

    Clive Forbes

The main objective of the training seminar was to improve quality standards and efficiency in an industry that is critically important to regional development. This was achieved by presenting fundamental concepts and theories about cruise tourism to operatives in all industry sub-sectors. This seminar was particularly successful not just for the massive attendance but for the fact that presenters effectively revealed and explained the basic concepts and objectives that underlie the cruise tourism industry while providing a forum for discussions about previous experiences and future strategies for the growth and development of Cartagena’s cruise tourism sector.

The seminar programme featured presentations which provided insights into cruise line itinerary planning, destination marketing, creating the shore side experience and the Caribbean and South American cruise markets. Other components of the course included customer service excellence and a historical perspective of the cruise industry. These topics were presented by two facilitators Fritz Pinnock of the Caribbean Maritime Institute and Ms. Julie-Anne Burrowes of On-board Marketing.

    Fritz Pinnock

The response of participants was very positive and proved the seminar’s success.

‘The training was very productive and I hope that all the people in the cruise tourism industry take advantage of this’ said Francisco Javier Vergara Piñeres, Senior Vice President of Tourism ProExport.

Participants were presented with Certificates on completion of the workshop. The workshop is accredited by the Caribbean Maritime Institute. Participants earn one credit towards the Institute’s maritime degree programme.
