CSA holds first major conference
for 2009:
Shipping executives from the
Caribbean and Latin America to meet in Colombia
2009, May 10: More than 150 executives and
operations managers in the regional shipping industry are expected to arrive in
Cartagena de Indias, Colombia next week-end for the eighth Caribbean Shipping
Executives Conference (CSEC). The three day event begins on Monday May 18 at the
Las Americas Global Resort hotel.
The Caribbean Shipping Executives Conference is
an annual event for top decision-makers in the shipping industry of the
Caribbean and Latin American region. It is the first of two major conferences put on
each year by the Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA).
Registration of delegates had been steadily
increasing in the three weeks leading up to this event and passed the 140 mark
two weeks before the conference. Conservative estimates were that more than 150
delegates will attend.
The shipping executives will receive
presentations and discuss a number of issues occasioned by the current economic
recession. Presenters will focus on global economic developments and the effect
on regional trade and the maritime industries. In this regard, the topics slated
for presentation at this conference were designed to give participants tools and
intelligence with which to deal effectively with the decline in economic
activity in the Region and the world. During the first two days,
participants will receive presentations on topics including:
- Global Economic & Trade Outlook (Cruise &
Cargo): The Changing Drivers
- Economic & Trade Outlook (Cargo & Cruise) for
the Caribbean and Latin America
- Impact on the Cargo Industry and How
Businesses can stay "afloat" and Maximize Growth
- An Outlook of Mexican Ports & How They can Add
Value to The Region
- Managing Today's Maritime Risk for Future
Growth
- The Luxury Yacht Sector: Business
Opportunities for the Region
- Movement of Goods: A Regional
Approach Towards Tomorrow
The eighth CSEC will also focus on the ‘Strategic
positioning of Caribbean and Latin America cruise tourism’ as well as the
potential Port Community Systems offer for improved efficiencies, business
development and growth. These issues will be discussed on the third day of the
event when there will be two concurrent sessions: the Cruise Industry Conference
and a Trade Facilitation Workshop.
CSA President Fernando Rivera will call the
conference to order on Monday May 18 at 9.30 a.m. However, on Sunday May 17, a
number of collateral events will take place at the conference hotel. There will
be meetings of a number of CSA standing committees including the Port Awards
Committee; the Cruise (Industry) Committee, the Board of Trustees of the
Training Trust; and, the CSA General Council.
The Conference is being hosted by the Port of
Cartagena. The Colombian airline Avianca is the conference official airline
partner.
