President and Vice
President unanimously returned at 38th Annual General Meeting in Port of Spain.
2008, October 13, POS, Trinidad and Tobago:
Fernando Rivera of Puerto Rico (left in photo) was unanimously returned for a third
consecutive terms as President of the Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA). Vice
President Carlos Urriola of Panama was similarly re-elected.
The elections took place on the first day of the
38th Annual General Meeting of the CSA in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
The 38th AGM, Conference and Exhibition is held at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad
hotel from October 13 to 15, 2008. The country’s Minister of Works and
Transport, Colm Imbert, was the keynote speaker at the opening ceremony.
The leadership in Group A (shipping agents and
private stevedores) and Group B (port and marine terminal operators) were also
returned unopposed. However, in Group C (the ship owners and vessel operators
group) Cyril Seyjagat (CMA-CGM) was elected Chairman. David Ross (Seafreight
Line) is the only new face on the CSA’s General Council. He was elected Group C
representative.
In his opening statement, the CSA President noted
the importance of shipping to Caribbean national economies and the importance of
the developmental role played by the Association.
“If shipping is the lifeblood of the Caribbean,
then the Caribbean Shipping Association is the heart”, he told the 260 delegates
representing all four language groups of the Region.
As regards port security, he said the CSA had
already announced the decision to assist regional ports with port security.
Advice on port security systems and operations requested by regional ports, he
explained, will be provided by the proposed CSA Security Assessment Council
where needed.
“This CSA regional initiative will be taken a
step further at this conference with a meeting of key players on Tuesday
(October 14). This meeting will involve the Port Managers Association of the
Caribbean; CARICOM; Caribbean Central American Action (CCAA) and the
Organization of American States (O.A.S.),” he said.
