2008, October 14, POS, Trinidad and Tobago: The Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA) has entered into a Cooperation Agreement with the Organization of American States Inter-American Committee on Ports (OAS-CIP). The documents bringing the two organizations together were signed today in Port of Spain, at the 38th Annual General Meeting, Conference and Exhibition of the CSA.

The documents were signed by CSA President, Fernando Rivera and the Executive Secretary of the OAS-CIP, Carlos Gallegos at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad hotel where the CSA’s conference is being held. The signing was witnessed by the delegates attending the conference.

The Cooperation Agreement has as its main features:

    * coordination of efforts on issues of common interest such as maritime trade, port security, port administration; port investments and the application of agreements

    * establishment of cooperative working relationships between technical committees with common interests

    * hemispheric studies investigations and surveys that can assist ports in both organizations; and,

    * collaboration in mutual conferences, seminars, training, technical committees to promote wider understanding and adoption of shared principles

Both organizations will coordinate their schedules of events to encourage the maximum participation of the members (of the two organizations). Both will also be exploring opportunities for joint programming and joint action in a number of areas including training and human resource development.

The Memorandum also encourages both organizations to announce and promote the events of each other and to link their respective websites.

In remarks at the end of the signing ceremony, CSA President Fernando noted that this agreement provided the basis for both organizations to immediately start working together in the area of training.

PRESENTATION: Mr. Gallegos (left), who also made a brief address at the end of the signing ceremony, welcomed the new link of cooperation between both organizations and expressed optimism about the benefits to be gained. To mark the occasion, he presented as a goodwill gift to the CSA  a flag of the OAS, which was received by CSA President Fernando Rivera (centre) and CSA Vice President, Carlos Urriola.
