  • The  fifth annual Caribbean Shipping Executives Conference

    2006, May 15: The  fifth annual Caribbean Shipping Executives Conference, May 22 to 24, in Willemstad, Curaçao, hosted by the Caribbean Shipping Association, will bring together the top decision-makers in regional shipping for three days of deliberations, technical presentations and discussion.

    Registration was expected to get close to the 200 mark by the morning of May 22 when Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA) President, Corah Ann Robertson-Sylvester calls the conference to order.

    The keynote speaker at the opening ceremonies will be Governor of Curaçao, Mrs. L. M. Richards-Dindial.

    Delegates represent the four language groups in the Caribbean region and border countries in Northern South America, Central America and the North American mainland. Given the number of European lines which serve the Caribbean, many delegates will also cross the Atlantic for this event.

    The CSA’s fifth annual Caribbean Shipping Executives Conference will focus on a number of topics dealing with Trade, Handling of Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Materials; Ship size and port facilities; and, Disaster Preparedness.

    “Trade Liberalization and the Effect on Maritime Transport” will be addressed by Ramesh Chaitoo, Services Specialist at the Caribbean Regional Negotiating Machinery based in Barbados and Sacha Vacianna, Consultant, Trade Specialist based in Jamaica. There will also be presentations on the topic “Trade Logistics & Supply Chain Management” by Francisco J. Ricaurte, Caribbean Operations Manager, Latin America District, United Parcel Service Supply Chain Solutions, based in Florida.

    The business of “Handling Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Material” will be addressed by Peter Fitt of the West Coast Maritime Institute, Canada.

    “Customs Reform and Modernization in the Caribbean” will be presented by Julian G. Lopez Ramirez, Commissioner of Customs & Excise, Netherlands Antilles.

    “Ship Size and Port Facilities”, a very important topic at this time, given the rapid increase in the size of ships now being employed in all trades, will be presented by David Bindler, President of David Bindler Consulting Limited of the USA.

    Other papers to be presented at the Curaçao conference include: “Corporate Social Responsibility”. “Disaster Preparedness and Relief” will be presented by Ambrose Phillip, General Manager, Grenada Ports Authority and Guus Verhagen, from Maritime Institute De Ruyter, Curaçao.

    The third day of the CSA conference will be dedicated to the cruise industry. Delegates will focus on a number of topics vital to the growth and development of the cruise industry, a pillar of Caribbean national economies.

    Cruise issues will be addressed by Horace Hord - Regional Vice President, Royal Caribbean International/ Celebrity Cruises and Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace – Secretary General of the Caribbean Tourism Organization.
