2006

2006, December 11: The Shipping Association of
Guyana has completed its restructuring process and has established a more
effective governing structure.
In 2006 the Association was reorganized in an
effort to “energize” its members and to deepen and expand its relationship with
other stakeholders. In pursuance of its goals, the Association was
transformed into a trusteeship and a new management structure was established
with the appointment of a new Managing Committee.
The Committee is chaired by
Andrew Astwood, Managing Director (Acting) of Guyana National Shipping
Corporation Ltd. The Vice Chairman is Bernie Fernandes, Marketing Director of
John Fernandes Ltd.
Eight other members complete the management team
in keeping with the new constitutional requirements coming out of a recently
completed (Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) project. The project
was for institutional strengthening of the Association and had as a major
component a three-year Strategic Plan.
Trustees of the Association are Messrs. Clinton
Williams, Chief Executive Officer of Guyana National Industrial Company; Chris
Fernandes, Managing Director of John Fernandes Ltd. and Malcolm Bascom, retired
Managing Director of Guyana National Shipping Corporation.
Other activities being undertaken are the
construction of a new database website at www.shipping.org.gy which has links to
various shipping companies, agencies and lines. Including in the project is a
training regime to address enhancement of the knowledge and skills of industry
employees and a small reference library to assist members with relevant material
pertinent to the maritime industry.
A membership drive was put in motion during 2006
so as to ensure
that all stakeholders in the Guyana shipping industry participate in the planned development.
