2006, November 30: The Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA) elected new leadership at its 36th Annual General Meeting, held recently in Panama City.

Fernando Rivera of Puerto Rico was elected unanimously by member-delegates at the Caesar Park Hotel to be the 14th President of the regional body which is recognized as the voice of the Caribbean shipping industry. Carlos Urriola Tam of Panama was elected, also unanimously, as Vice President.

Mr. Rivera, Vice President of the CSA for the past three years, was formerly President of the Puerto Rico Shipping Association (PRSA). He served the PRSA in that capacity for nine years. He has been sitting on the CSA’s General Council for the past six years and has represented the CSA at various conferences. He has served the Association on the Port Awards Committee. He replaced Corah Ann Robertson-Sylvester of Jamaica, who served three terms as CSA President.

Mr. Urriola, the new Vice President, a native of Panama, has been sitting on the CSA’s General Council for the past six years and was Chairman of the Association’s marine ports and terminals group (Group B) at the time of his election to the number two spot in the Association.

Over 250 shipping executives from all four language groups of the Caribbean, as well as North America, South America and Europe attended the 36th Annual General Meeting, Conference and Exhibition in Panama in October. They elected the following persons to join the governing body of the Association - the General Council: Michael Bernard, presently President of the Shipping Association of Jamaica; Ian Deosaran of Trinidad and Tobago; Trevor Philip of Saint Lucia; and, David Jean-Marie of Barbados.

Of this group, two have previously given service in the leadership of the CSA.

Trevor Philip is no stranger to the policy-making machinery of the CSA. In fact, the founding President of the Shipping Association of Saint Lucia was elected to the General Council in October 1999 and served for three years as Group A representative.

Michael Bernard has been a part of the policy-implementation organization of the CSA for over six years. A member of the CSA’s Silver Club, he has been a member of the CSA’s Port Awards Committee since 2000 and in this regard has been a part of the process of selecting the winning ports in this annual CSA competition

The General Council of the Caribbean Shipping Association for the year 2006-2007 is:

Fernando Rivera, President; Carlos Urriola Tam, Vice President; Corah Ann Robertson-Sylvester, Immediate Past President.

GROUP A (Ships' agents and private stevedoring contractors including national shipping associations): Robert Foster, Chairman; Michael Bernard, Ian Deosaran; Trevor Philip.

GROUP B (Port and terminal owners and operators): Grantley Stephenson, Chairman; and, David Jean-Marie.

GROUP C (Shipowners/operators): Johan Bjorksten, Chairman; and, Cyril Seyjagat.

The Executive Members of the General Council are Stephen Bell, General Manager of the CSA and Michael Jarrett, Director of Information and Public Relations.
