2006, September 30: Caucedo Multimodal Port,
Santo Domingo, yesterday became the the first Dominican Republic port to operate
cargo X-ray equipment.
According to Dominican Today web news service,
the equipment was donated to the country by the United States Customs and Border
Service,
within an agreement aimed at maximizing the security inspection of
merchandise which enters and exits Punta Caucedo Port.
The report said that at the commissioning of the
equipment, Customs Director Miguel Cocco revealed that the machines cost an
estimated US$2 million and that similar equipment will be installed in other
ports, starting with Haina.
Dominican and U.S. Customs personnel will operate
the new system.
On July 7, Dominican Republic and the
United States signed a Joint Declaration of Principles, which promises
to provide greater security to a growing volume of commercial interchange...,
