2006, August 1: A new container and cruise terminal proposed for construction in South West New Providence Island in The Bahamas is expected to cost about USD200 million.

Frank Comito, Executive Vice President of the Bahamas Hotel Association, is said to have disclosed the massive scale for the project when he gave an update on the new Bay Street redevelopment complex.

As quoted by the Nassau Guardian (by Barry Williams), Mr. Comito said: "The major focus of the plan, and most expensive, calls for the relocation of all the current commercial/container shipment terminals and docks to a new site in southwest New Providence, close to the old Clifton Pier site."

The new port is expected to transform the foreshore stretching the length of Arawak Cay all the way to Fort Montagu. It is also expected to have a positive impact on tourism. Operators of some of the major cruise lines have reportedly complained for years about the unkempt Bay Street environment. The area has been described as “seedy” and “rundown”.

Prime Minister Perry Christie has said that the new port facility and the facelift planned for the Bay Street will make the popular tourist strip commonly referred to as "Downtown" the next “tourist Mecca that will bring an economic boost to the public and private sectors”.
