2006,
April 10: Outgoing President of the Shipping Association of Trinidad and
Tobago (SATT), Sonja Voisin-Tom, in welcoming the appointment of Portia
Management Services Ltd. to operate the Port of Port of Spain, said she expected
a high level of performance at the Port.
Mrs.
Voisin-Tom, in her last statement as the first female President of the SATT,
said that the people of Trinidad and Tobago expected the United Kingdom-based
firm to deliver “efficiencies and production results”.
She said:
"I welcome Portia Management Services Ltd. to the T&T shipping sector. I
expect that their wealth of experience in the business of port management will
be of tremendous benefit to the port and to the T&T economy. The PPOS is
pivotal in any national development initiative and therefore, its effective and
efficient management is crucial at this stage of our country's history.”
Mrs.
Voisin-Tom, a member of the General Council of the Caribbean Shipping
Association, noted: "Port costs ripple right through national economies,
especially those of island-states like T&T. In fact, port costs affect the
price of goods and services in nearly every sector of the economy. In this
regard, the people of T&T have a right to a modern, well-managed, cost
effective port system.
"The
management contract calls for Portia to report to a local board. It
also requires Portia to develop a Business Plan and to train personnel to
develop competencies based on international best practices. Thus, local content
is working alongside foreign service-providers and knowledge is being
transferred to the economy. This is good for our people and for our national
development
"The SATT,
as a corporate citizen of T&T, expects that Portia will perform well and deliver
the efficiencies and production results expected of them. Indeed, we have
no reason to think they will not be able to meet our high expectations."
Mrs.
Voisin-Tom, now Immediate Past President of the SATT, served a maximum term of
five years on the SATT Executive and was not eligible for re-election at the
Association’s 67th Annual General Meeting, held on 28th March, 2006 at the
Crowne Plaze, Port of Spain. Stewart Sankar was elected President.
