Tropical and CCAA involved
2006, April 8: Tropical Shipping and Caribbean
Central America Action (CCAA) have been working with the Dominica Port
Authority, Customs and the Excise Division in testing new technologies and
processes to improve the movement of cargo through sea ports.
Jennifer Nugent-Hill, VP of Tropical Shipping (a
US-based company), explained that the object of 12-month pilot project is to
improve technology which will enable materials, goods and data to be moved in
“real time.”
She told a press conference: “Just imagine you
brought your goods in and they are time dated sensitive, we can get them on the
shelves faster. … We can move toward getting a better quality of life for our
people because the goods are on the shelves in real time and it’s not sitting
somewhere getting old or stale,” she said.
The project provides for customs and the port
authority to be equipped with support systems, including hardware and software
technology; and, training of personnel. This will allow for the implementation
of processes that will allow for electronic data exchange to be received and
shared in real time to the appropriate government agencies, the media heard.
Mrs Nugent-Hill believes that because Dominica
has a smaller port, the success of the project will be seen earlier and this was
the reason it was selected for the exercise.
Benoit Bardouille, General Manager of the
country's Port Authority is supportive of this initiative.
“We’re very thankful for the initiative of our
partners here and we are seeking to see how we can expedite and use Dominica as
a test site so that the other islands within the OECS and the wider region can
begin to pattern on the advantages and the success that were gained from this
pilot project,” he said, as reported by Malaika Laurent, Caribbean Net
News Dominica Correspondent.
