2006,
March 31: Portia Management Services Ltd, a British company, has been hired by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago to manage cargo-handling at the commercial port in Port of Spain.
Minister of Works and Transport Colm Imbert made
the announcement yesterday at the Annual General Meeting of the Shipping
Association of Trinidad and Tobago, which was held at the Crowne Plaza hotel in
Port of Spain .
According to Imbert, Portia Management Services
is the second largest company of its kind in the UK, and has managed ports in
Europe, Africa and India.
The
$30 million, three-year contract between the company and the Port Authority of
Trinidad and Tobago has been hailed by the minister as "a significant milestone
in the process towards the attainment of international cargo-handling standards
in Trinidad and Tobago".
Imbert also announced that the introduction of a
vessel management system in the Gulf of Paria is being considered by Government.
Portia Management Services Ltd is the
international arm of The Mersey Docks and Harbour Company (MDHC). The
Company provides management, advisory, consultancy, training, financial and
other services to ports and related organisations throughout the world.
Portia was established in 1978 and is a
wholly-owned subsidiary of the MDHC.
