Jamaican government
moves to collect more from cruise passengers
2004, November 3: The Jamaican government
announced plans to charge cruise passengers a two dollar (USD2.00) fee for entering the
country.
A bill to introduce a Tourism Enhancement Fee
passed in the country’s House of Representatives this week and will now go on
to the Senate for final approval. The bill also proposes a ten dollar (USD10.00)
fee for airline passengers.
“Monies collected will be paid into a dedicated
Tourism Enhancement Fund, established as a body corporate under the auspices of
the ministry," said the country’s Minister of Tourism, quoted in the “Gleaner”
newspaper.
The money will be used in part to finance the
Government's $1.6 billion Tourism Master Plan.
