2003, March 4:
Panama President, Mireya Moscoso was the one appointed
put the seal on the historic celebration of the “baptism” of the cruise ship
Coral Princess in the locks of Gatún on January 17. This was the first time
that a ship was Christened while crossing the Panama Canal.
The President, who was
designated the official godmother of the largest vessel of Princess Cruise
Lines declared in her native tongue: "I name you Princess Coral. May the
Lord bless this ship and all those that sail in her."
The vessel which cost
some 450 million dollars, is 105.64 feet wide by 964.57 feet in length. It
established a new tolls record of $217,513.75.
Phil Kleweno, president
of Princess Cruises, said that these ships transit the Panama Canal more
than any other line. He said there are plans to duplicate the number of
trips via the Canal, because of the good relationship established with the
Republic of Panama.
Panama’s Minister of
Commerce and Industrias, Joaquin Jácome, indicated that the National
Government had shown interest in the development of the tourism of cruises.
Trey Hickey, Manager
International of Princess, expressed his satisfaction with the first baptism
done by this company in Latin America. He said the Company had chosen
Panama as a country with a great future and for which “we have great plans".
Before finalizing the
act there was an exchange of gifts. The president received a necklace of
corals, while she presented a picture of the Panamanian Pollera.
