Barbados to receive its
largest cruise ship today
2002,
April 17: The
Adventure of the Seas, considered the world’s largest cruise ship,
is due to arrive in the port of Bridgetown, Barbados today.
The Royal Caribbean
International mega-ship, made its maiden voyage from the Kvaerner Masa-Yards
in November last and was the first cruise ship allowed to dock at the New
York City Passenger Ship Terminal following the September 11 attack on the
World Trade Centre. The ship arrived in New York on November 12 and Royal
Caribbean held a naming ceremony for the vessel at Pier 88, Berth 1.
Following a short two-night
complimentary cruise for emergency workers at the World Trade Centre and
their families, the ship sailed to Puerto Rico, to make the Caribbean its
first order of business.
The 137,300 GT
Adventure of the Seas is 1,020 feet long and over 150 feet wide
(beam) wide and has capacity for 3,800 passengers and crew.
