2001, July 31: The Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA) presented a number of
workshops this (2001) Summer to look at ways of getting more from the
tourism and specifically, the cruise industry.
The BTA is encouraged by the
steady growth of cruise ship arrivals and the annual increase in the
number of passengers coming ashore in Bridgetown.
Barbados received 362,611
cruise visitors in 1990 and 533,278 in 2000. Preliminary estimates for
2001 shows a record 295,210 passengers for the period January to April
over 44,500 more than for the corresponding period last year.
In recognition of the
importance of this sector a cruise tourism sub-committee, which includes
members of the Bridgetown Port and the private sector, was set up within
the Barbados Tourism Authority. It had a mandate to plan strategies and
programmes to further develop the segment and promote Barbados as a
preferred tourism destination..
