2007

2007, January 16: The building in which the Dominican Republic’s Sans Souci
cruise
terminal facilities were housed is to be demolished and replaced with a larger, modern
structure of approximately 10,000 square metres.
The new terminal is expected to be open for December’s tourist season,
according to the local news organ, Dominican Today.
The structure will be three stories. The second floor of 3,200 square metres,
will house Immigration and business offices.
The third level, with 1,200 square metres will provide ample passageway
around the building and provide access to the cruise ships. This level features
the most modern security equipment and systems.
The terminal will be capable of handling close to 3,800 tourists per ship, in
addition to ship’s crew. Royal Caribbean’s famous cruise ship "Legend of the Seas" is expected to dock
here
during the 2007-2008 season.
It is expected that this development will stimulate tourism business activity
in surrounding neighborhoods, including Villa Duarte, the Colonial City and
Ciudad Nueva.
The main seaports for tourism in the Dominican
Republic are the tourist port of Sans Souci, the tourist
port of Don Diego and the Ferry Terminal Cristóbal Colon in Santo Domingo. La Romana has a port of embarkation and international a tourist wharf.
In Puerto
Plata the port is to be expanded to allow cruise ships to call there.
