Each year the Caribbean Shipping Association proclaims two of the many seaports across the Region 'CARIBBEAN PORT OF THE YEAR'.
The annual Caribbean Port of the Year Competition encourages and promotes port development and efficient port operations. It recognizes those ports that have sustained a high level of efficiency while maintaining programmes for on-going development of human resources and systems.
The competition looks at a port's overall efficiency and dependability and on measures
implemented to achieve higher levels of productivity, growth and development.
In 2003 the structure of the competition was radically changed. There are now two sections: Best Container Port and Best Multi-purpose Port. Two trophies are now awarded. The first winner of the Best Container Port was Kingston Container Terminal, Jamaica. PLIPDECO of Trinidad and Tobago won the first award for Best Multi-purpose Port.
